2,400 kWh of solar power used to disappear into the grid each year was the reason I finally installed a home battery. My rooftop panels were already doing fine, but I was exporting most of their afternoon output and buying electricity back during the evening peak. I chose a 10-kilowatt-hour lithium battery with a hybrid inverter, partly because I wanted something simple enough to monitor without becoming a full-time technician.
The installation took one day, and the awkward part was finding room beside the old fuse box. The electrician labeled every cable, explained the battery backup circuit, and left me with an app showing solar production, household load, state of charge, and grid import. That first evening felt satisfying: the battery charged to 100 percent before dinner, then carried the refrigerator, lights, router, and television through the expensive hours.
Before installation, my smart meter regularly showed a sharp jump after 4:00 p.m., especially when cooking and running the heat pump together. Now I set the battery to reserve twenty percent for outages and discharge the rest during peak pricing. On an average weekday, that means I import almost nothing between dinner and bedtime. My bill has fallen by roughly 35 percent, although the exact saving changes with weather and tariffs. I still buy power overnight, but the evening peak is no longer the painful part of the statement.
I did have one minor hiccup in winter: the app said the battery was unavailable even though the house had power. I restarted the inverter and found a tripped communication breaker; the installer replaced it the next morning. Since then the system has been boring in the best way. I keep a small 12v batterij for emergency lights, but the main solar battery handles daily life.
