Solution Solar Inverter
Before installing my home battery, I assumed the biggest benefit would be backup power during outages. In practice, the daily bill savings have mattered more.
I have a rooftop solar array paired with an abb inverter and a 10-kWh lithium-ion battery. It was installed last spring, and the setup took nearly a day. The electrician explained the battery settings clearly, including the reserve level I should keep for outages. I chose 20%, which feels like a sensible compromise.
Our utility uses time-of-use pricing, so I now charge the battery from excess midday solar and use that stored energy after 4:00 p.m., when rates jump. On sunny days, the battery usually carries our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television through dinner. It does not run the oven and heat pump indefinitely, but it cuts our evening grid consumption dramatically. Last month, our electricity bill was about $68, compared with roughly $126 during a similar month before installation. That’s meaningful savings without changing routine.
The most useful feature has been automatic backup. During a windy evening, the power flickered and the battery switched over so quickly that only the microwave clock reset. I noticed the app showed “backup active,” while the refrigerator kept running.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped charging one afternoon even though the panels were producing. The monitoring app showed an internet connection warning, not a hardware fault. I restarted our router, waited five minutes, and charging resumed. That reminded me that solar storage depends on ordinary home networking more than I expected.
After several months, I am happiest with the predictable peak-hour savings, not the novelty of watching the battery percentage fall. I still check it occasionally, but it now feels much more normal.
