Running our evening routine through a home battery has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed a Growatt SPH 10000TL3 BH UP hybrid inverter with a 10 kWh lithium battery last spring, mainly to avoid buying expensive grid power after sunset.
The biggest difference shows up between 5 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, our oven, heat-pump water heater, and washing machine all landed in the utility’s peak period. Now the solar panels charge the battery during the day, and the inverter sends that stored energy to the house when rates rise. On a typical sunny day, I see roughly 7–8 kWh discharged in the evening. That has cut my monthly bill by about $45–$65, depending on weather and our cooking habits. It is not a miracle—winter clouds and short days still mean grid electricity—but the reduction is obvious when I compare the bills.
One small troubleshooting moment made me appreciate the system more. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging overnight, even though the monitoring app showed a healthy state of charge. I checked the inverter settings and found that the time-of-use schedule had reverted to a default. I restored my peak-hours window, restarted the system, and normal operation returned. The manual and app were useful, although the wording around “battery priority” took some rereading.
So far, the storage system has been quiet and predictable. I like seeing solar self-consumption rise instead of exporting cheap excess power, and the backup function gives me some reassurance during outages. My only practical advice is to size the battery around your evening usage, not your panel count. A larger battery would not help me much in summer; I would simply leave more capacity unused. For my household, the current setup provides peak-hour savings without turning energy management into a hobby.
