Our solar battery went in last spring, and the biggest difference has been how little I think about peak hours now. Before, our utility’s time-of-use rate made dinner and laundry the most expensive part of the day. I would get home, turn on the oven, and watch the meter spin. Now the battery charges from our rooftop solar through the afternoon, then runs the house after sunset. On a clear day, it usually covers the fridge, lights, router, and cooking without pulling much from the grid.

I check the app over breakfast, mostly out of curiosity. In May, our bill was about $68 lower than the same month last year, although weather and rates aren’t perfectly comparable. Across several months, savings feel real, but not like a dramatic overnight payback. The battery shifts usage; it doesn’t make electricity free. I like seeing the evening grid draw fall to nearly zero when the panels had a good day.

One small surprise came during a cloudy stretch in January. I had assumed the battery would be full every evening, but two gray days in a row left it lower than usual. Then our inverter app showed a warning that the battery reserve was set too high. I had left it at 30% after a brief outage the previous summer and forgotten about it. I lowered the reserve to 20%, not zero, since I still want a little backup for the freezer and internet. After that, it used more stored solar overnight, and the warning disappeared. I didn’t need a technician, just five minutes reading the settings carefully.

When I occasionally charge our older ford plug-in hybrid, I schedule it for midday rather than drain the battery at night. That’s a small habit, but it keeps the system working the way I intended.
