Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Early last summer, I installed an EEL Battery Box beside my inverter, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become painful. We already had solar panels, but most of their production happened while we were at work. Without storage, we exported cheap daytime power and bought expensive electricity later when cooking, running the dishwasher, and charging our two phones and laptop.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in our garage, connected it to the existing solar inverter, and walked me through the monitoring app. I spent the first week checking the battery state of charge far too often. By the second week, I stopped worrying about it because the routine became predictable: solar charged the battery through the afternoon, then the EEL Battery Box supplied the house after sunset.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., our utility’s peak period. Before adding the solar battery, our evening usage regularly pushed the daily bill higher than I liked. Now the battery covers most of that window. On a typical sunny day, it supplies around 7–9 kWh overnight, and our monthly bill has dropped by roughly 30–40 percent compared with the same season last year. The exact savings depend heavily on weather and how much we run the heat pump, but the reduction is obvious.
I did have one minor scare during a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve level earlier than usual, and the app showed grid power flowing into the house. Nothing was broken; I had simply set the backup reserve too high. Lowering that setting restored more usable capacity while keeping enough emergency power for short outages.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I rarely think about the energy storage system now, but I notice the lower bills every month. For our household, adding battery storage made the existing solar panels considerably more useful.
