Nearly two years ago, I added a 10 kWh solar battery to my system, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become high. I work from home, so the dishwasher, cooking, and air-conditioning ran after sunset, when solar production had stopped.
The installation was easier than I expected. I searched for an “inverter near me,” compared two installers, and chose the one that explained the battery’s charge settings clearly. They mounted the battery beside the garage and connected it to a hybrid inverter. The crew finished in one day, although I had to wait an afternoon for the utility to approve the export settings.
The first month involved learning. I left the system in automatic mode, but it discharged too early on cloudy mornings. After changing the reserve level from 20% to 35%, I had enough backup for the evening and still woke up with a comfortable margin. That small adjustment made the solar battery feel much more useful.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before storage, our monthly bill in summer was usually around $180. Now it is commonly between $85 and $105, depending on weather and how aggressively we use the air-conditioner. I am not claiming the battery pays for everything; winter savings are smaller, and the monthly payment matters. Still, avoiding those expensive peak-hour purchases feels satisfying, especially when I can see the battery supplying the kitchen while the panels are already dark.
I did have one minor scare: the monitoring app showed the battery offline after a router update. The battery continued working, but I restarted the gateway and reconnected Wi-Fi. It has been stable since. For me, the real win is predictable evening power, lower bills, and less dependence on grid prices—not a futuristic gadget, but a practical part of home energy storage.
