Solution Solar Battery
After switching my home to solar battery storage last spring, I noticed the biggest difference not on sunny afternoons, but after dinner. My panels still produce plenty here, yet my utility charges most between 4:00–9:00.
I installed an easysolar ii gx with a 10kWh lithium battery, and programmed it to charge from the panels during the day, then carry the house through that expensive window. The setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer handled the wiring and battery cabinet, while I spent an evening learning the inverter display and phone monitoring app. It felt satisfying to see the state of charge rise at lunchtime instead of watching electricity disappear back into the grid.
Before storage, our evening routine regularly pushed the meter into the highest tariff rate. Now the battery runs our refrigerator, lights, internet, and heat-pump controls after sunset. On a typical weekday, I use about 7kWh from stored energy, saving roughly $2–$3. That sounds modest, but over a month it has been around $70, depending on weather and laundry habits. I also like seeing fewer grid imports on the utility dashboard; the battery is doing useful work instead of sitting idle.
My one minor troubleshooting moment came during a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve level earlier than expected, and the inverter switched to grid power. I initially thought something had failed, but the app showed low solar production, not a hardware fault. After raising the reserve slightly and waiting for a brighter day, everything returned to normal.
The practical lesson for me is that battery capacity matters less than good settings and realistic expectations. I do not try to run the oven and clothes dryer overnight; I save stored power for essentials and peak hours.
