I installed a 10-kWh solar battery last autumn after watching my evening electricity bills climb every winter. The reason was simple: my panels produced plenty of power at lunchtime, but our family used most electricity after dinner.
The installer mounted the unit in my garage and connected it to the inverter. Setup took most of a day. I chose a system using a lipo battery, and the app showed charge levels clearly enough that my spouse checks it without asking me.
During sunny months, I set it to charge from solar until full, then discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. That schedule made the difference. Before storage, we ran the dishwasher, induction cooker, and heat-pump dryer during the expensive evening window. Now the battery handles nearly all of that. On clear days, our grid meter barely moves until bedtime, and my bill has fallen from roughly $210 to $120. It varies with weather, but the savings feel rather than theoretical.
The only hiccup happened during a stormy week. The battery reached its reserve early, and the app sent repeated low-charge alerts. I initially assumed something was broken, but the installer explained that the backup reserve was working as configured. I raised the reserve from 15% to 25% afterward, which gives us more protection during outages without noticeably reducing savings.
After six months, I am pleased with the result. It has not eliminated my electric bill, and cloudy weeks still require grid power, but it has shifted our consumption away from peak pricing. I also like having backup power for the refrigerator and internet during outages. Lower bills and less worry make storage worthwhile.
