Having my home battery storage system running for six months, I have finally stopped watching the utility meter climb every evening.
I installed a 13.5-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my inverter last autumn, mainly to use excess solar after sunset instead of sending it back to the grid. The installation itself was less dramatic than expected. The installer handled the wiring and permits, while I spent most of the day checking the app and asking questions about backup reserve settings.
The biggest practical change is during peak-rate hours. Before the battery, our electric bill jumped whenever we cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and used air conditioning at once. Now the battery supplies that evening load almost automatically. In a typical summer month, I used around 80% of my stored energy between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., and my bill fell by roughly $65. That is not a thrilling number on paper, but it adds up, and I notice the difference more than I expected. My solar production now covers most of the battery charging, so I am buying much less expensive grid power.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. One morning, the app showed the battery at 42% even though it had been sunny the previous day. I found the inverter had switched to backup reserve mode after a brief outage, leaving 40% locked away. Changing the reserve setting restored normal operation, but it reminded me that battery storage is not completely “set and forget.” Now I check alerts once a week and keep the reserve at 25%, which feels like a reasonable balance between bill savings and outage protection.
From a homeowner’s perspective, the shipping process was the easy part overall.
