I installed my first home solar battery last spring, using a 10kWh pack built around lifepo4 304ah eve cells. I was tired of watching my electricity meter climb every evening, especially after cooking dinner and running the heat pump. The goal was simple: store midday solar energy and use it during expensive peak hours.
The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. My installer mounted the battery in the garage, beside the inverter, and connected it to a dedicated backup circuit. The app took a few attempts to pair, but once it did, I could see solar generation, battery state of charge, household load, and grid import in one place.
What impressed me most was the evening discharge. On sunny days, the battery reaches 100 percent around midafternoon, then starts covering my cooking, dishwasher, lights, and heat-pump load when the utility rate changes. Before storage, I was buying roughly 8 to 12 kWh from the grid during that window. Now that figure is usually 1 to 3 kWh. My monthly bill has dropped by about $45 to $70, depending on weather and how much heating we use. It is not a magic zero-dollar bill, but the difference is obvious when I compare statements.
I did have one minor scare in the first month. The battery stopped discharging at 25 percent, even though the app showed plenty of solar had been stored. I checked the settings and found the backup reserve had accidentally been raised to 25 percent during commissioning. Lowering it to 15 percent fixed the issue immediately. That small lesson mattered: the battery is automatic, but I still need to understand its operating modes, reserve setting, and time-of-use schedule.
After several months, I’m happy with the setup. It reduces grid dependence, provides backup, and makes my solar panels more valuable every day.
