I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My system uses lifepo4 cells 280ah eu stock in a 48V rack battery cabinet, paired with a hybrid inverter and my existing rooftop solar panels.
I had an electrician add a battery breaker, fuse, and communication cable, but the physical installation was surprisingly straightforward. The cabinet sits beside my inverter, with short cables and plenty of ventilation. I did not attempt the high-voltage work myself; having the electrician check polarity and torque made me much more comfortable.
Before, I usually watched my electricity use climb between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m., when solar production had faded but cooking, laundry, and heating were still running. On sunny days now, the panels charge the battery first; after sunset, the inverter quietly switches to battery power and returns to the grid only when the battery reaches my reserve level.
That change cut my peak-hour consumption dramatically. My monthly bill used to average around $180, and it has been closer to $110 during the warmer months, even though my overall household usage is similar. The exact amount varies with cloudy weather and utility rates, but seeing the battery discharge on my monitoring app during dinner is genuinely satisfying.
The only nuisance came after a firmware update. One morning, the battery showed a communication warning and stopped charging from solar. I shut down the inverter as the manual instructed, waited five minutes, and restarted it. The warning cleared, but I later discovered the update had reset the charge schedule. Restoring the time-of-use settings fixed everything. I now check the app weekly and keep a printed copy of my settings nearby. That small lesson made the system feel manageable, not mysterious anymore.
