8pm was the moment I stopped treating my solar panels as something that only worked during the day. Before installing a 48v 100ah lifepo4 battery, I sent plenty of cheap solar power back to the grid and then bought it back during expensive evening hours.
My setup is fairly ordinary: ten rooftop panels, a hybrid inverter, and this 5kWh LiFePO4 solar battery in the garage. I had an electrician install the battery isolator and monitoring meter, but I did the app setup myself. The first evening, I charged the battery to 100% by about 2:30pm. At 4pm, the inverter switched from grid power to battery power automatically. By bedtime, I was still running the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, washing machine, and television without pulling from the grid.
That change matters most between 4pm and 9pm, when my utility charges its peak rate. My usual pre-battery evening consumption was around 7 kWh. I now use roughly 1.5kWh from the grid. On my latest bill, peak imports fell from 186 kWh to 43 kWh. My total bill dropped by about $68, which is more noticeable than I expected. The battery does not eliminate every charge—cloudy days still require grid power—but it shifts the predictable nightly load nicely.
My only annoyance came during the first hot week. The battery stopped discharging at 35% state of charge, even though the house was importing electricity. I initially blamed the inverter, but the monitoring app showed a high temperature warning. The garage had reached 38°C. I improved ventilation, moved a small fan nearby, and lowered the inverter charge current slightly. After that, discharge resumed normally. I appreciated that the lithium iron phosphate battery gave me a clear code instead of simply failing silently.
For now, the system is doing exactly what I bought it for.
