lifepo4 battery weight

I installed my home solar battery storage system last spring, mainly because my electricity bills jumped whenever the sun went down. My rooftop panels already covered most daytime use, but evenings meant buying expensive grid power. The battery changed that routine more than I expected.

The setup was fairly simple. An electrician mounted the inverter and connected a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in our garage. I had worried about the lifepo4 battery weight, especially getting it through the narrow side door, but two people handled it with a trolley. Once installed, the app showed solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption in real time.

The biggest practical win is peak-hour savings. I programmed the battery to charge from solar during the afternoon and discharge between 4:00pm and 9:00pm. On sunny days, it powers our refrigerator, lights, internet, and cooking without much grid usage. My monthly bill fell from about $180 to $105 over the summer, although rates and weather vary. That is roughly $75 saved each month, which makes the solar battery feel worthwhile.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. The app still claimed everything was normal, so I initially suspected a faulty inverter. After checking settings, I found the backup reserve had reset from 20% to 100%. Lowering it back restored the evening discharge immediately. I now check the app after updates instead of assuming the system will keep its settings.

I am still learning how much energy we use, but the battery data has made surprisingly easy. I can see when the heat pump or oven creates a spike and adjust our habits. Reliable overnight power and lower peak-rate consumption matter more than chasing independence. I'd add another battery if use grows.
