6 months ago, I added a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) solar battery to my rooftop system, and it has changed how I use power after sunset. My main goal was simple: store excess solar energy during the afternoon and avoid expensive evening grid electricity. I was especially interested in the battery’s advertised safety and cycle life, since the pack uses a 4680 lfp cell configuration.
Setup was less intimidating than expected. The installer mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the hybrid inverter, and programmed a 20% backup reserve. I chose that setting because short outages are common here, but I still wanted usable capacity for daily savings. On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full charge by midafternoon. At 5 p.m., it begins covering the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater. That shift is the biggest practical win: I am no longer buying as much peak-hour electricity.
Before storage, my monthly bill averaged about $185 in summer. With similar weather, it now lands around $92, although rates and household use vary. I do not treat the difference as pure profit, because the battery cost money, but the lower peak usage is immediately visible on my utility statement. The app shows state of charge, solar production, and grid consumption in five-minute intervals. I check it with my morning coffee every day.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the inverter stopped charging the battery even though the panels were producing. The app reported “standby,” which was not very helpful. I power-cycled the inverter once, waited five minutes, and restarted the charging schedule. Everything returned to normal that afternoon. Support also confirmed the firmware had reset my time-of-use settings. Now I keep screenshots of my schedule before updates, which saves frustration.
