.After installing my solar battery last spring, I started paying much closer attention to when our household actually used electricity. The biggest change has been shifting consumption into the evening instead of treating the battery as emergency backup only.
Our 9-kilowatt rooftop array charges the lithium iron phosphate battery through the afternoon, and the inverter starts feeding that stored energy into the house around 4 p.m. When utility peak rates begin, the refrigerator, heat pump, lights, and dishwasher are running mostly on solar battery power. That schedule alone cut my monthly bill from roughly $185 to $112 over the summer, even though our usage stayed about the same.
I was initially nervous about the installation because I had read confusing claims about 3.2 volt batteries and battery storage sizing. My installer explained that the individual cells were assembled into a safer, larger home battery pack, so I did not need to buy loose cells or manage the battery management system myself. The physical setup took most of one day: wall brackets, conduit, a disconnect, and a new monitoring meter. What impressed me was how little disruption there was. The crew finished before dinner, and the inverter app showed charging that evening.
The only hiccup came during a cloudy week in November. The battery reached zero earlier than expected, and I assumed something had failed. After checking the app, I found the reserve setting had been changed from 20 percent to zero during a firmware update. I restored the reserve and contacted support, who confirmed the update behavior and sent instructions for locking that setting.
Since then, the battery has covered our evening loads reliably, including two short outages. It switches over quickly enough that the lights barely flicker. I check charge each morning, but no longer worry about peak pricing.
