Over the past six months, my rooftop solar battery has changed the way I use electricity after sunset. Before installing it, I sent most of my solar power back to the grid during the day and then bought expensive electricity in the evening. Now the battery charges from midday solar production and runs my refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, lights, and heat-pump water heater through the peak period. That timing has made the biggest difference to my bill.
My average monthly bill fell from about $180 to $92, although weather and utility rates still make the numbers move. The savings are not dramatic every day, but over a full season they are obvious. On sunny days, the system usually reaches full charge by early afternoon. I set the battery reserve at 25 percent, so it can keep essential loads running during an outage, but I let it discharge deeply during expensive evening hours. Seeing the app show grid usage dropping to nearly zero between 5 and 9 p.m. feels surprisingly satisfying, especially when the dishwasher and washing machine are running on stored energy.
Installation was easier than I expected, though the electrician spent most of an afternoon checking the breaker panel and programming the inverter. I had originally considered a portable inverter with battery, but for daily home use I chose a wall-mounted lithium iron phosphate battery tied into my existing solar inverter. The wiring looks tidy, and the battery makes only a quiet hum when charging.
The only real hiccup came during the first hot week. The battery stopped discharging at 40 percent, even though the app claimed everything was normal. I found the backup reserve setting had accidentally been raised after a firmware update. Lowering it restored normal operation immediately. That lesson made me check settings after updates instead of assuming a hardware problem.
