6 months ago I installed a 10 kWh solar battery in my garage, and the biggest surprise has been how much less often I think about electricity. Before the battery, my rooftop panels mostly helped during the day, when our family was out. By dinner, we were pulling expensive grid power just as the utility rate climbed. Now I charge the battery from excess solar around lunchtime and use that stored energy after 4 p.m.
The difference shows up clearly on our monthly bill: it fell from roughly $185 to $92 during the first full month, despite similar weather and the same thermostat settings. I am not claiming the battery eliminated my bill; winter days still require grid electricity, but avoiding those peak-hour charges makes the investment feel practical rather than theoretical.
My installation experience was easier than expected. The installer mounted the inverter and battery cabinet on a concrete wall, then connected the system to my existing solar array. I had worried about complicated maintenance, but the app gives me a simple view of solar production, battery state of charge, household consumption, and grid imports. I check it over coffee, mostly because watching the battery fill while breakfast is oddly satisfying.
One small hiccup happened during setup. The backup circuit did not switch over during a brief outage. I found a loose communications cable behind the inverter; after the installer reseated it, the transfer worked properly. Since then, I have tested backup power twice, running the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and garage door opener without trouble.
I also keep a 36v lithium ion battery charger in my workshop for a small separate battery project, though it is not part of the home storage system. That distinction matters: the solar battery uses its own integrated charge controller, while that charger stays separate.
