Running my solar battery system has changed my electricity bills. I installed a growatt 5kva inverter with a 10kWh lithium battery last summer to stop buying expensive grid power during evening peak hours. Before that, my family used the oven, washing machine, and air conditioner between 6pm and 9pm, when our tariff was highest.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the inverter in the garage beside the main electrical panel and put the battery on a wall bracket. They spent the day checking cable runs, programming the battery charge limits, and showing me the monitoring app. My complaint was that the Wi-Fi connection dropped twice during the week. Rebooting the router fixed it, and I have not had a problem.
The difference appears on my bill. On days, the solar panels fill the battery by afternoon. Once the sun goes down, the battery supplies the house instead of pulling from the grid. I still use roughly the same amount of electricity, but far less of it is purchased at peak rates. My bill fell from about $210 to $120, averaging $90 in savings each month. That is not a theoretical estimate; it shows up on the utility statement.
I was nervous about battery degradation, during cloudy weather. The inverter leaves a reserve, so it does not completely discharge, and I have only needed grid power a handful of times. During a three-day rainy stretch, I adjusted the washing schedule and avoided running the dryer at night. I also like seeing solar production, battery state of charge, and consumption in one place.
The system feels worthwhile. The lesson is that battery storage delivers the best value when I let it handle peak demand, rather than expecting it to eliminate grid charges.
