Running our solar battery storage system for the past eight months has changed how I think about electricity. Before installation, our evening routine meant cooking dinner during expensive peak hours and watching the meter climb. Now the battery charges from our rooftop solar panels through the afternoon, then carries us through dinner, laundry, and most of the evening.
The biggest difference showed up on our first full month. Our utility bill fell from about $186 to $72, even though we had several cloudy days. That is not a perfect comparison because rates change, but the peak-hour savings are obvious. The battery is programmed to discharge between 4 and 9 p.m., and I can see it working in the monitoring app when the grid import line stays nearly flat. It feels especially satisfying when the air conditioner starts and we are still using stored solar energy instead of buying electricity at the highest rate.
Planning the system was less intimidating than I expected. I used the fronius solar configurator to compare panel and inverter combinations, although my installer made the final call. We chose a hybrid inverter with a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. The installer explained that usable capacity would be slightly lower than the advertised number, which turned out to be helpful and honest.
One small hiccup happened during the second week. The battery stopped discharging overnight, even though the app showed plenty of charge. I restarted the inverter, checked the backup reserve setting, and discovered I had accidentally raised the reserve to 80 percent. Lowering it to 20 percent fixed everything immediately. That moment taught me to understand the battery settings instead of trusting the colorful dashboard.
