6:30 each morning I check my home battery app before coffee. After six months with a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery, I have stopped thinking about electricity as something mysterious. The panels charge it through the day, and the battery carries us through dinner, laundry, and the expensive evening hours.
My utility plan has time-of-use pricing, so this schedule matters more than the total number of solar kilowatt-hours we produce. Before storage, we used to send surplus power back to the grid at a low credit, then buy it back at nearly double the price after 4:00 p.m. Now I usually charge the battery by midafternoon and run the house from it until bedtime.
The result is pleasantly boring: my peak-hour consumption has fallen by roughly 70%, and our monthly bill dropped from about $180 in summer to $95-110. It is not a perfect number every month because cloudy weather and winter heating still hurt, but the battery has made the biggest difference.
Setup was easier than I expected. The installer mounted the inverter beside the electrical panel, added a battery disconnect, and connected the backup circuit for our refrigerator, well pump, router, and a few lights. The app took a day to show accurate numbers, but after that I could see state of charge, solar production, and grid imports without opening the utility account.
One small hiccup happened during a storm. The battery stopped charging at 42%, and the inverter displayed a communication warning. I power-cycled the gateway once, checked that the disconnect had not tripped, and called support. They found a loose network connector and shipped a replacement cable under warranty. It has been fine since, even through two outages.
I considered a 36 vdc long shaft boat outboard motor, but that is unrelated to my solar setup.
