I installed a 10-kWh LiFePO4 battery in my garage last spring, mainly to avoid buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My solar array is only 6.6 kW, so before adding storage I was still pulling power from the grid between about 5 and 9 p.m., even after sunny days.
The installation took most of a Saturday. My electrician mounted the battery beside the inverter, added the battery management system, and checked every connection carefully. I had spent too much time reading about lifepo4 bus bars, cable sizing, and battery safety to feel comfortable with a rushed job. The finished setup looked fairly simple, but the monitoring app took a little experimenting before I understood the difference between solar production, household consumption, and battery discharge.
The biggest improvement has been my evening bill. On a typical sunny day, the battery charges to around 95% by mid-afternoon. It then powers my refrigerator, internet equipment, lights, and heat-pump water heater through the expensive hours. Before storage, those hours often cost me $2 to $3 per day in grid electricity. Now that figure is usually under 50 cents, depending on how much cooking and laundry we do. Across a month, my bill has dropped by roughly $55 to $70.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment during the first month. The battery stopped discharging at 40% state of charge, even though the app showed no fault. I eventually found that the backup reserve setting had been raised during commissioning. Lowering that reserve fixed the issue immediately, and I now keep it at 20% unless a storm is coming.
The system has not made me energy independent, especially during several cloudy winter days, but it has made my solar investment much more useful. I also like knowing that essential circuits can run during a short outage. For my household, predictable peak-hour savings have mattered more than chasing maximum battery capacity.
