2am is when I really noticed what my solar battery was doing. I woke up during a summer power outage, expecting the usual silence from the refrigerator and the irritating beep of our alarm panel. Instead, everything was still running. The battery backup had switched over so smoothly that I only realized something was wrong when I looked outside and saw the neighbors’ houses were dark.

Our setup uses rooftop solar panels, an inverter, and a 10kWh home energy storage battery. I originally searched for 32v lithium batteries because I wanted to understand the technology, but our installer recommended a higher-voltage lithium iron phosphate battery for the complete system. I was nervous about the installation, especially drilling near the garage wall, but the crew finished in one day and explained the monitoring app clearly.

The biggest everyday difference is during peak hours. Before adding storage, our air conditioner ran from the grid after sunset, when electricity rates were highest. Now the battery charges from excess solar in the afternoon and powers the house from about 5 p.m. until bedtime. Our monthly bill has dropped by roughly 35 percent, although the exact savings depend on cloudy weather and how aggressively we run the AC. On sunny weeks, the difference is obvious: the utility bill is mostly service charges and a small amount of imported energy.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging because its reserve setting had been accidentally raised to 40 percent. I lowered it to 20 percent in the app, and normal operation returned the next evening. That small lesson made me appreciate having battery monitoring instead of guessing.

The system has not made us completely energy independent, but it has made our electricity use calmer and more predictable. I check the app occasionally, and I especially enjoy seeing solar power cover dinner, laundry, and overnight essentials instead of buying expensive peak electricity.
