I installed a 10 kWh LiFePO4 home battery last spring. My rooftop solar system covered most daytime use, but our cooking, laundry, and hot-water heating happened after sunset, when the tariff was highest.
The difference showed up immediately. On sunny days, the battery reached 95–100% by mid-afternoon. It then carried the house from about 4 p.m. until bedtime, running the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and induction hob without pulling much from the grid. Before storage, our monthly bill averaged around $145. During the first full month with weather, it fell to $82. The following month was $76, although I shifted the dishwasher and washing machine into daylight hours too. I am not pretending the battery eliminated my bill; fixed charges and a few cloudy days still show up. However, avoiding those peak-rate hours has made the biggest practical difference.
I also learned not to obsess over every app number. Early on, I noticed the monitoring screen briefly displayed a strange “lifepo4 zellenspannung” warning after a firmware update. The inverter was still operating normally, but the battery stopped charging at 90%. I restarted the system using the manufacturer’s shutdown sequence, checked the battery management system logs, and contacted the installer. They updated the firmware again and balanced the cells remotely. Since then, the warning has not returned, and the battery has charged to its normal limit.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic routine. I do not have to think about switching circuits or starting a generator. The solar inverter sends surplus energy into storage, and the BMS protects the pack while I get on with dinner. I am saving roughly $60–$70 a month in the brighter seasons, and backup power during short outages is an added bonus. For my household, dependable peak shaving matters more than chasing perfect energy independence.
