8 months ago, I added a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery to my rooftop solar system, and the biggest difference has been what happens after sunset. Before the battery, my house automatically imported electricity during the expensive evening period. Now, the battery charges from surplus solar around lunchtime and runs the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and heat-pump water heater through most of the evening.
My utility’s peak rate is nearly three times the overnight rate, so this simple shift has made a noticeable dent in my bill. My average monthly bill dropped from about $145 to $68, although the exact savings depend on cloudy weather and how much heating or cooling we use. I usually set the battery to reserve 20 percent, then let it discharge during peak hours. That reserve gives me some backup power without making me anxious about a long outage.
The installation was easier than I expected, but measuring the wall space mattered.
