Friday evening, after three months of watching my solar panels send cheap electricity back to the grid, I finally installed a home energy storage battery. The main reason was simple: our utility charges almost three times more during the 4–9 p.m. peak window than overnight. I wanted to use my own solar power after sunset instead of buying it back.
I chose an lfp lithium battery with a usable capacity of 10 kWh. The electrician finished the installation in one day. Once configured, the system charged from excess midday solar and automatically switched our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump water heater to battery power in the evening.
The difference showed up quickly on the bill. Before storage, our summer bills averaged about $145. Last month, with similar weather and nearly identical household use, we paid $82. That is not a magic 50 percent reduction because the battery still uses a little electricity for charging and backup reserves, but saving roughly $63 felt very real.
My favorite practical moment came during a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve level earlier than expected, and the app sent an alert. I discovered the installer had set backup reserve at 30 percent, which was unnecessarily cautious for our area. I lowered it to 20 percent, then watched the next day’s solar production refill the battery. I kept the setting after checking that local outages are usually short.
It has not made us completely energy independent. In winter, several gray days can drain the battery, and the inverter occasionally delays switching by a few seconds. Still, daily battery cycling has made our solar investment feel much more useful. I now check the state of charge with my morning coffee, and seeing the house run through peak hours on stored energy rather than grid power is easily my favorite part.
