.Last winter I finally added a 10-kWh solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to stop buying so much electricity during peak hours. Before the installation, my panels produced plenty during the day, but I was still drawing expensive grid power from 4-9pm.
The installer mounted the battery in my garage and connected it to a hybrid inverter. I had read about the exact phrase "3.2 v prismatic cell" while comparing battery packs, but I cared more about usable capacity, warranty, and whether the battery management system would behave reliably than about the cell label. Setup took most of a day. The only annoying part was waiting for the electrician to update the monitoring app; I could see production but not the charge level for several hours.
Since then, my routine has changed. On sunny mornings, I run the dishwasher, washing machine, and heat pump while solar generation is high. Around 3pm, the battery usually reaches 100%. After sunset, I use stored energy for lights, refrigeration, and cooking. The battery automatically switches to discharge when the tariff rises, so I rarely notice anything except the quieter meter reading.
My average evening grid use fell from roughly 6-8 kWh to under 1 kWh. That cut my monthly bill by about $35-45, depending on weather. In summer, savings are better because of longer daylight hours; on cloudy weeks, the battery still covers the most expensive period.
I did have one small troubleshooting scare. The app showed a battery temperature warning after a very hot afternoon. I checked the garage, found the ventilation fan clogged with dust, and cleaned it with a soft brush. It worked perfectly.
