Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Early this year I added a lithium solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My installer paired a 10kWh battery with my existing 5kW inverter, and the difference showed up on the first full month.
The battery charges from surplus solar around midday, then automatically discharges between 4pm and 9pm, when our utility rate jumps. I leave the settings alone most days, and that simplicity has been the biggest surprise. On sunny weekdays, the battery carries our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes induction cooking through dinner. We still pull a little grid power during cloudy weather, but our monthly bill dropped from roughly $180 to $75, averaging about $105 saved.
The most noticeable benefit is peak-hour shifting. I used to watch the meter climb after work, especially when the air conditioner ran. Now I use stored energy first and reserve grid electricity for late-night charging only. Based on six months of bills, the battery has paid back more slowly than advertised, but the savings are consistent and I like the quieter feeling of not relying on the grid as much.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging one evening. I checked the app and saw a reserve setting had changed from 20% to 80%. Once I restored it, the system worked normally; support answered my message the next morning and confirmed the update caused it.
For anyone comparing storage options, I would not automatically choose a lead acid battery 48v 20ah simply because it is cheaper upfront. My lithium iron phosphate battery is lighter, offers more usable capacity, and fits neatly in my garage. I may add another module next summer, but for now this solar battery quietly saves money every day.
