Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
8 months ago I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery beside my inverter. My main goal was simple: keep the house running from stored solar after sunset and avoid expensive evening grid electricity. Before that, my rooftop panels exported surplus power most afternoons, while the heat pump and induction cooker pulled energy from the utility at dinner time.
The installer mounted the battery in the garage, added a hybrid inverter, and finished the wiring in one long day. The label says 18650 lfp. I was nervous about the monitoring app, but setup was straightforward; I entered my tariff periods and battery reserve level. I set reserve at 20%, which leaves enough backup for a short outage without wasting useful capacity.
The most noticeable change is my peak-hour bill. Previously, our evening usage often cost about $2.40 to $3.10 between 4 and 9 p.m. Now the battery automatically discharges then, and my typical daily charge is roughly $0.70, depending on cooking and weather. Across a month, this has cut my electricity bill by about $55, not counting the extra solar energy I no longer export cheaply.
I still check the state of charge before a cloudy day, because two gloomy days can leave the battery starting lower than I like. My one minor troubleshooting moment happened during a firmware update. The app showed “battery unavailable,” even though the inverter was producing normally. I checked the breaker, restarted the monitoring gateway, and waited ten minutes before contacting support. The battery recovered on its own after the gateway reconnected, so I did not need a service visit.
That small scare taught me to keep a paper copy of the shutdown procedure and support number nearby. I learned advertised capacity is not the same as usable capacity once reserve limits apply.
