After living with rooftop solar for two summers, I finally added a langzeit solarbatterie 280ah battery to stop sending so much cheap midday electricity back to the grid. My main goal was simple: use my own solar power after sunset and cut peak-hour imports.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in my utility room, next to the inverter, and connected it to the existing solar battery system in one morning. The only surprise was the amount of checking involved: they tested the emergency shutoff, updated the energy management settings, and watched the meter while the battery charged and discharged. I appreciated that patience because the battery monitoring app made more sense once I saw the actual flow.
On a sunny day, the battery usually reaches full charge around 2:30 p.m. My dishwasher, heat pump, and refrigerator then run partly from stored energy. Before storage, our evening electricity use regularly pushed us into the expensive tariff period. Now the battery discharges from roughly 5 p.m. until 10 p.m., depending on cooking and heating. Over the first full month, my grid consumption during those hours fell by about 70 percent. The bill dropped roughly 38 euros compared with the same month last year, though weather and prices naturally vary. That saving feels more useful than a headline efficiency number because I can see it every evening in the app.
I did have troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at its 20% reserve. I assumed the solar inverter had failed, but the app showed “backup reserve” had changed to 80%. I reset that value, restarted the controller, and normal operation returned within a few minutes. Since then, I have left the reserve at 25%, enough for outages and still practical savings.
