Solution Solar Battery
4 months ago, I installed a 10 kWh solar battery in my garage, and the biggest surprise has been how much calmer my evening electricity use feels. Before the battery, my solar panels covered daytime loads, but the house switched to expensive grid power as soon as dinner started. Now the battery charges from excess solar around noon and carries most of our evening demand until bedtime.
My utility’s peak period runs from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., so I programmed the battery inverter to discharge during those hours. On sunny days, it usually supplies the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and kitchen appliances without pulling much from the grid. My daily peak-hour savings are typically $1.50 to $2.50, depending on weather and how much cooking we do. That works out to roughly $45 to $60 per month, which is more noticeable than I expected.
The setup was fairly straightforward, although I did spend an afternoon checking cable sizes and labeling everything. I also needed a 240v to 12v converter for a small 12-volt ventilation fan and monitoring equipment near the battery cabinet. That little component was not the main system, but choosing the right fuse and keeping the wiring tidy made me feel much more comfortable.
One evening, the battery stopped discharging at its normal rate. The monitoring app showed a temperature warning, even though the garage did not feel especially hot. I cleaned dust from the cabinet vents and moved a stored box away from the intake. After that, the temperature dropped and performance returned to normal.
I’m not pretending the battery has erased my electric bill. Cloudy stretches still require grid power, and the upfront cost was significant. However, watching the solar battery cover our most expensive hours every day has made the investment feel practical, especially because our home uses less grid energy when rates are highest.
