Most evenings, I used to watch my utility meter climb after dinner, especially when the heat pump, dishwasher, and water heater ran together. Since installing a 10kWh solar battery last spring, that habit has changed.
The battery charges from my rooftop solar during the afternoon, then carries the house through the expensive evening peak period. I set a reserve of 20%, so there is still backup capacity for an outage, but most nights I use roughly 6kWh before midnight. On my old rate plan, that shift saves about $2.50–$3.00 per day. It sounds modest, but my monthly bill has fallen from around $185 to $112, even with similar usage. The biggest surprise is how much I appreciate quiet savings; I am not constantly thinking about electricity anymore.

I am considering adding another module next year, but only if my utility offers better export rates. For now, this setup gives predictable peak-hour savings and less meter anxiety.
