2 winters ago, I added a 10 kWh solar battery to my rooftop system, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after sunset. The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected: the electrician mounted the battery beside the inverter, connected it to the existing solar panels, and walked me through the monitoring app in an afternoon.
The biggest change has been our evening routine. Before storage, the house pulled power from the grid from about 5 p.m. until bedtime, exactly when my utility charges the highest rate. Now the battery charges from surplus solar around lunchtime and supplies the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump water heater through the peak period. On clear days, I regularly see the app report 80 to 95 percent of our evening energy coming from stored solar. Our monthly bill fell from roughly $180 in summer to around $75, although weather and air-conditioning use still make the number move around. The savings are real, but I appreciate the quieter feeling of using electricity I produced earlier that day even more.
I did have one small troubleshooting scare. During a cloudy week, the battery stopped discharging at 30 percent. The app showed a reserve setting I had accidentally enabled while experimenting with backup mode. Once I lowered that reserve, everything worked normally. I also keep a small 12v to 110v inverter for camping and emergencies, but I do not connect it directly to the home battery; the installed system has its own safe inverter and transfer equipment.
After six months, I have not expanded the setup. I am watching winter performance first. For me, the battery is not magic or complete energy independence. It is a practical solar storage buffer that shifts daytime generation into expensive evening hours, reduces grid dependence, and makes rooftop panels more useful.
