Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Early last spring, I installed a deye hybrid 5kw inverter with a 10 kWh lithium battery in my garage. I wasn’t chasing energy independence; I mainly wanted to stop buying expensive electricity from the grid between dinner and bedtime.
During sunny afternoons, my solar panels now fill the battery instead of sending everything straight back to the utility. Around 4 p.m., the battery starts covering the house: refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights. When the time-of-use rate jumps at 5 p.m., I can see the inverter pulling almost no power from the grid on the monitoring app. That feels much more satisfying than simply watching solar production climb.
My average evening grid use has dropped from roughly 8 kWh to 2 kWh. On a typical summer bill, that saves me about $35 to $50 a month, depending on cloudy weather and air-conditioning use. I still buy some electricity overnight, but the battery storage system has noticeably softened the peak-hour charges.
The one hiccup came after a hot day. The battery stopped discharging at 62%, and the app showed a warning about temperature. I checked the garage and realized the ventilation fan had tripped its outlet. Resetting it brought the fan back, but I waited until evening before changing anything. The inverter resumed discharge normally once the battery cooled. That experience convinced me to keep the equipment area clear and check alerts instead of assuming the system was broken.
I’ve also learned that battery storage rewards habits. I run laundry and charge power tools during daylight when I can, then let the solar battery handle the evening. I don’t obsess over achieving zero grid use; I like seeing fewer peak imports on each bill. For me, the deye hybrid 5kw setup has been less about flashy technology and more about making our everyday electricity costs predictable.
