2 winters ago, I installed a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery beside my rooftop solar inverter, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My house is small, but our cooking, laundry, and heat-pump use all happen after sunset, exactly when the utility rate jumps. The change was more noticeable than I expected: on sunny days, the battery charges by early afternoon and carries us through dinner without pulling much from the grid.
Before installation, my monthly bill averaged about $185 during summer and $120 in mild months. After adding the storage system, summer bills have landed around $85, depending on cloudy weather. The solar panels still do most of the work; the battery simply shifts that daytime energy into the peak period. I do not pretend it makes electricity free, but avoiding those four high-rate hours has made the investment feel practical.
My most useful real-world lesson came during a week of rain. The battery reached its reserve setting every afternoon, then the inverter showed a communication warning and stopped discharging. I was tempted to call the installer, but I first checked the obvious things: the battery breaker, the Wi-Fi connection, and the cable plugs. The breaker had tripped after a brief outage. I reset it, waited through the inverter's startup sequence, and the warning disappeared. Since then, I have raised the backup reserve from 15 to 25 percent, so we still have lights and refrigeration if the grid drops overnight.
I also keep a 12v lithium battery 20ah plus charger for camping and emergency phone charging, but it is separate from the home solar battery. That distinction matters: it cannot run our oven or heat pump. For my household, the win is quiet, automatic peak shaving. I check the app once weekly, clean the panels, and let the system work.
