I installed my home battery last autumn, to stop buying electricity during the evening peak. My setup is eight rooftop solar panels, a hybrid inverter, and a 10 kWh lithium storage battery mounted in the garage. I chose a system built around a lithium rv battery 200ah format because I wanted a battery size I could understand and maintain.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before storage, cooking dinner, running the heat pump, and washing clothes pushed my household into the expensive tariff period. Now the solar battery charges through the afternoon, then automatically discharges after sunset. On weekdays, my evening grid usage has dropped from roughly 8 kWh to 2 kWh. That usually saves me about $2 to $3 per day, or close to $60 in a typical month. It is not a miracle, but seeing the electricity meter barely move while the oven is running feels satisfying.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging during a cold spell, even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I initially blamed the inverter, but the installer explained that the battery management system had paused discharge because the temperature in the garage was too low. After adding an insulated cabinet and improving airflow, it behaved normally. I now check battery temperature along with state of charge, instead of assuming an app warning means something has failed.
The practical lesson for me is that storage works best when I shift loads intelligently. I run the dishwasher around lunchtime, preserve capacity for the evening, and keep a reserve for outages. My solar battery has not eliminated my bill, but it has made costs more predictable and reduced my dependence on peak electricity. For everyday home use, that reliability matters more to me than chasing perfect energy independence.
