Early last summer, I finally added a deye 6 kw hybrid inverter and a 10kWh lithium battery to my rooftop solar system. Before that, my panels exported much of their afternoon energy while I bought expensive electricity after dinner. The change was most noticeable during our first summer week.

I set the battery to charge from solar first and discharge between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m., when our utility rate is highest. We run the dishwasher, clothes dryer, heat pump, and kitchen appliances during that window without pulling much from the grid. My evening consumption drains the battery to about 25% by bedtime, leaving enough reserve for the refrigerator and a few lights overnight.

My bill dropped from roughly $185 to $112 in the first comparable month. It is not a dramatic zero bill, because cloudy days still require grid power, but saving about $73 each month feels real. In spring, when the heat pump runs less, I expect more savings. The monitoring app also makes the benefit easy to see: I can watch solar production, battery state of charge, and grid import without guessing.

The only hiccup came during a weekend outage. The battery stopped discharging after I changed a backup setting in the app. I spent about twenty minutes checking the breaker and communications cable before realizing the inverter needed a restart. After switching it off, waiting a minute, and turning it back on, backup power returned. I now leave those settings alone and test the backup output every couple of months.

For me, the biggest advantage is not energy independence; it is shifting my solar energy into the evening instead of selling it cheaply. The deye 6 kw system has made our power use feel more deliberate, and the monthly savings are enough to justify the battery investment.
