I installed a battery system last autumn, mostly because our evening electricity use kept pushing us into the expensive peak period. The setup uses a victron energy multiplus ii inverter with two lithium batteries in my garage. I was nervous about doing the changeover myself, but the electrician made the actual installation surprisingly tidy. We kept the existing solar panels, added a battery isolator and monitoring cable, and spent most of the appointment checking settings rather than drilling holes.
The first week was the real test. On sunny days, the batteries were usually full by early afternoon, and they carried us through dinner, laundry, and the heat-pump water heater without pulling from the grid. Before installing them, our evening consumption regularly landed in the higher tariff window. Now the inverter switches over automatically around 4 p.m., and the difference on the bill is easy to see. Our first full month saved about $68, even though winter weather reduced solar production. That is not a dramatic headline number, but it feels meaningful because the saving repeats quietly every day.
The only hiccup happened during a cloudy Saturday. I noticed the battery percentage had stopped climbing at 54 percent, even though the panels were producing. I initially assumed something had failed, but the monitoring app showed a charging limit I had accidentally set while experimenting with backup reserve settings. Raising the limit fixed it immediately. That small mistake taught me more than a dozen sales demonstrations: these systems are flexible, but the settings are not completely foolproof.
I now check the app once or twice a week, mainly to confirm the reserve is ready for outages. During a recent evening blackout, the lights stayed on and the refrigerator never missed a beat. That reassurance makes the investment worthwhile.
