I installed a victron easysolar system last spring after watching my electricity bills climb every summer. The main reason was simple: I wanted to use my rooftop solar power after sunset instead of sending so much back to the grid. My setup includes 6kW of panels, a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, and the inverter charger in the garage.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before the battery, that was when our cooking, laundry, heat-pump, and lights pushed us into expensive peak-rate electricity. Now the solar battery charges during the afternoon, then discharges automatically as the sun drops. I usually see the inverter supplying between 500 watts and 2.5kW, depending on whether the oven or washing machine is running.
My monthly bill has fallen from roughly $210 to $95, although weather and utility rates obviously change. The saving is not magic; it comes from avoiding grid imports when the rate is highest. On a sunny day, I often reach bedtime with 35–45 percent battery remaining, which gives me confidence through the night. During cloudy stretches, I set a reserve at 25 percent rather than draining it completely. That small cushion has been useful during brief outages, when the essential-loads circuit keeps the refrigerator, router, and a few lights running.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment in the first month. The battery stopped discharging at 60 percent, even though the house was importing power. I found that a firmware update had reset the battery-management settings. After checking the Victron app and restoring the charge and discharge limits, it behaved normally again. I now glance at the state of charge before bed and clean the panel area every weeks. Those habits take less than five minutes and have made the system feel dependable than mysterious.
