Every evening, I used to watch my electricity meter climb after dinner, especially when the heat pump, dishwasher, and water heater all started together. Since installing my home solar battery last spring, I have changed that routine completely.
My setup is fairly ordinary: four-point-two kilowatts of rooftop solar, a ten-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery, and a hybrid inverter. The installer finished the wiring in one long day, but I spent the following week learning the app and adjusting the charge settings. I set the battery to fill from midday solar and discharge during our utility’s peak period. That simple schedule has made the biggest difference.
Before storage, my evening usage regularly pushed me into the expensive rate window. Now, the battery usually carries the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and heat pump until bedtime. On sunny days, I often finish the night with twenty to thirty percent remaining. My electric bill has dropped by roughly $55–$70 per month, although winter clouds reduce that saving. I like seeing the savings as actual avoided grid purchases rather than just watching solar production on a screen.
The only hiccup happened during a firmware update. The battery stopped discharging one evening, and the app showed “standby.” I checked the breaker, rebooted the inverter, and contacted support. They explained that the update had reset my time-of-use schedule. Re-entering it fixed the problem, but I now screenshot my settings before every update.
I have not used a vehicle power inverter, since my battery is permanently mounted beside the electrical panel. Still, I appreciate having backup power during short outages. It switches over quickly enough to keep the router and freezer running, although I avoid running high-draw appliances.
For me, the best part is not total energy independence. It is the satisfaction of using yesterday’s sunlight after dinner.
