Quietly, my evening electricity routine changed after I installed a 10kWh home battery beside my solar inverter last spring. Before that, our rooftop solar system sent plenty of power back to the grid during the day, but we still bought expensive electricity after dinner. I chose a tqka lifepo4 battery because I wanted usable storage without changing our daily habits.

The installation was easier than I expected. My electrician mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to the existing solar system, and set it to charge from solar first. The only annoying part was getting the monitoring app to recognize the battery. It showed zero capacity for nearly an hour, even though the inverter displayed normal readings. Restarting the gateway and updating the firmware fixed it, but I definitely panicked for a few minutes.

Since then, the biggest difference has been during peak hours. The battery usually reaches 95–100% by mid-afternoon, then powers our refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and kitchen appliances through the evening. On sunny days, we rarely draw from the grid between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Our monthly electricity bill has dropped by roughly 30–40%, depending on weather and how much air conditioning we use.

I also like seeing the battery’s state of charge on the app. It makes energy use feel less invisible. If rain is forecast, I sometimes allow a small amount of grid charging overnight so the battery is not empty the next evening, although I try to rely mainly on solar.

After several months, the lithium iron phosphate battery still performs consistently, with no noticeable loss of capacity. It is not completely silent—the inverter makes a faint hum when charging—but that is easy to ignore in the garage. For me, the practical win is simple: daytime solar now covers more of our actual household use instead of disappearing back to the grid, and peak-rate electricity is no longer a daily worry.
