Running my home on solar power for a few months has made me pay attention to when electricity is actually being used. I installed a growatt inverter 5.5 kw 51.2V Battery in the garage, connected to six rooftop panels. The installation was less dramatic than I expected: the installer mounted the battery against a brick wall, ran short cables, and had the system charging before dinner.
What surprised me most was the evening schedule. I set the solar battery to charge during daylight and discharge from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., when our utility rates jump. Before storage, our dishwasher, heat pump, and cooking all landed in the expensive window. Now the battery usually carries those loads without pulling much from the grid. On sunny weekdays, my smart meter shows noticeably lower peak consumption; our monthly bill fell about 25 to 30 percent, despite running the air conditioner more this summer.
That is not a perfect saving every day. Cloudy afternoons can leave the state of charge near 35 percent by dinner, so I still buy some grid electricity. I prefer that honest result to exaggerated payback claims. The monitoring app is useful, although its graphs sometimes lag behind the inverter by several minutes. I check the battery percentage before starting the oven, rather than obsessing over every tiny fluctuation.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. One morning the battery showed a warning and stopped discharging. I turned off the heavy loads, checked the cable connections, and restarted the inverter through its normal shutdown sequence. The warning cleared after about five minutes. Growatt support confirmed it was a temporary communication hiccup between the inverter and battery, not a failed cell. Since then, I have added a simple Wi-Fi signal extender near the garage, and the connection has stayed stable.
