Having lived with rooftop solar for four years, I finally added a thundersky battery last autumn, mostly because my evening electricity bills were irritatingly high. My panels produced plenty during the day, but we were exporting that power cheaply and buying it back after dinner. The battery changed that routine immediately. Installation took one long morning, and the installer connected the battery to our existing hybrid inverter without rewiring the house. I appreciated the app, although its first-day graphs looked confusing.
Before the battery, our average winter evening usage cost about $4.20 after the sun went down. Now I usually charge to 95 percent by midafternoon and run the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, dishwasher, and heat-pump water heater from stored energy until bedtime. On a typical sunny day, the battery covers roughly 8 to 11 kilowatt-hours, and our daily grid purchase has dropped from around 18 kWh to 7 or 8 kWh. That sounds modest, but on our time-of-use plan, avoiding the 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. peak window saves about $2.50 on a normal day. Across the month, the bill is commonly $65 to $85 lower than it was last year, despite similar household habits. I check the app once or twice, but I do not babysit it.
The nuisance happened during a cloudy week in January. I noticed the battery stopped discharging at 30 percent, even though the app showed the house drawing power. I initially assumed something had failed, but the system had entered its reserve setting after two outages. I raised the reserve back to 15 percent, restarted the gateway, and operation returned. Customer support confirmed the battery was protecting backup capacity, not losing charge. That lesson mattered: the reserve level is not just a technical setting; it decides how much energy I can use each evening.
