Using my supervolt home battery for six months, the biggest surprise has been how much quieter our evenings feel financially.
Before installing solar storage, I watched the utility meter spin fastest between 4 and 9 p.m., when we were cooking, running the dishwasher, and charging two phones. That was also when our electricity rate was highest.
Now, the battery charges from our rooftop solar during the afternoon and carries most of that load after sunset. On a normal weekday, the app shows us using roughly 7 to 9 kWh from stored energy during peak hours. My monthly bill has dropped from around $180 to $95, though weather and seasonal rates obviously move the numbers. The battery hasn't eliminated the bill, but it has made the expensive part much smaller.
The only hiccup came during the first week. I noticed the battery stopped discharging at 6 p.m., even though the house was clearly pulling power. The monitoring app showed a reserve setting I hadn't understood. It was holding 30 percent for backup, so it simply refused to go lower. I changed the reserve to 15 percent, and discharge resumed that evening. That small lesson mattered: battery capacity isn't the same as usable capacity.
During a cloudy stretch last December, the battery reached its reserve earlier than usual. I initially worried the solar panels or inverter had failed, but the system was behaving normally; there just wasn't enough sunlight to refill the battery. Since then, I check the state of charge forecast before running the washing machine, rather than assuming stored energy is unlimited.
For me, the best part is the predictable routine: solar panels fill the battery, the battery handles dinner, and the grid covers whatever remains. I still keep a backup reserve for outages, so the house isn't dependent on perfect weather.
