Solution Solar Battery
X-shaped shadows from the morning roofline are the first thing I notice now; they fall across my solar panels while the home battery is still charging.
I installed an exide energy storage battery beside my inverter last spring, and the biggest surprise has been how much calmer our electricity use feels. Before storage, I watched the utility meter climb every evening when cooking, charging phones, and running the heat pump. Now the lithium battery stores excess rooftop solar during the afternoon and carries most of that load after sunset.
On a typical sunny day, the battery reaches 100% by mid-afternoon. I set it to discharge during peak tariff hours, and that simple schedule has made the clearest difference on my bill. Last month, my electricity charge was about $42 lower than the same month last year, despite using the oven more often. I know weather changes the comparison, so I am not treating that number as a guaranteed saving, but seeing the meter slow down at dinner time is genuinely satisfying.
I did have one small scare. During a storm, the monitoring app showed the battery offline even though the inverter display looked normal. I checked the breaker, waited a few minutes, and restarted the gateway. The connection returned without losing stored energy. That moment reminded me that backup power is not completely hands-off: the battery, inverter, app, and internet each have a role.
I especially appreciate the reserve setting. I keep 25% capacity untouched for outages, rather than squeezing every last kilowatt-hour for savings. When our neighborhood lost power for three hours, the lights, router, and refrigerator kept running quietly. The system did not run the whole house, but it covered what mattered.
