Using our solar battery system through the first full winter has changed how I think about electricity bills. We have a 5kW rooftop array feeding a 10kWh lithium battery and a sunsynk 5kw hybrid inverter. The main reason I chose this setup was to avoid expensive evening electricity rather than chase complete energy independence.
Before installation, our household used roughly 18kWh daily, with the dishwasher, oven, washing machine, and heat pump doing most work after sunset. On sunny days, the battery usually fills by early afternoon. I set it to discharge during the peak period, especially between four and seven in the evening. That small scheduling choice has made the biggest difference to our monthly bill.
Last year, before storage, our winter bills averaged about £145 per month. This winter, despite similar usage, they have been closer to £90, and one unusually sunny month came in at £72. I am not claiming the battery makes electricity free; standing charges and cloudy weeks still show up. However, watching the meter stay nearly flat while dinner cooks feels genuinely satisfying.
The practical test came during a cold, wet spell in January. Solar production was poor for several days, and the battery reached its reserve earlier than expected. One morning, I noticed the inverter app showing a warning that the battery had stopped charging. I checked the obvious things first: the isolators were on, the battery had no fault light, and the Wi-Fi connection was working.
After restarting the inverter, the warning disappeared, but charging did not resume immediately. A phone call to the installer identified a firmware update waiting in the monitoring portal. They guided me through it, and the battery began charging again about twenty minutes later. It was a hiccup, but it reminded me that batteries need occasional attention.
