Solution Solar Battery
Using my solar battery after sunset has changed the way I think about electricity bills. I had the sunsynk 12kw hybrid inverter installed with a 20kWh lithium battery, mainly because our evening usage was getting expensive. The biggest difference has been shifting power away from peak hours.
On a normal weekday, the battery charges from the rooftop solar during the late morning and early afternoon. Once the sun goes down, it supplies the house through dinner, when the induction hob, dishwasher, television, and heat pump are all competing for energy. I programmed it to hold a small reserve, then discharge between our utility’s expensive evening periods. Before the installation, those hours pushed our monthly bill noticeably higher. Now, in a sunny month, my electricity bill is roughly 35–45% lower. It is not magic—the result depends heavily on weather and how much energy we use—but the savings are easy to see on the bill.
I also appreciate monitoring. The inverter app shows solar generation, household load, battery state of charge, and grid import in one place. At first I checked it constantly, especially when clouds rolled in, but I gradually stopped obsessing over every watt. The battery has made our solar system feel more predictable rather than dependent on daytime sunshine.
The minor issue was a low-battery warning during several dark, rainy days. I had set the reserve too aggressively, so the system imported from the grid overnight. Adjusting the minimum state of charge solved it, and I now leave more headroom in winter.
After several months, my impression is practical rather than glamorous: the solar panels produce the energy, but the home battery makes more of that energy useful.
