Solution Solar Battery
After installing my home battery last spring, my evening routine changed more than I expected. I used to watch the utility meter climb whenever the oven, dishwasher, and heat pump ran after sunset. Now my solar panels charge the storage battery during the afternoon, and I draw from it through the expensive peak hours instead of buying electricity from the grid.
The biggest difference showed up on my first full bill. Before the battery, our monthly electricity cost averaged about $210, mostly because our utility charges more from 4-9pm. With the battery set to self-consumption mode, we used roughly 80% of our solar production at home, rather than exporting it cheaply at midday. That bill was $126, and the next two stayed between $118 and $135. Savings vary with cloudy weather, but the peak-hour reduction is very noticeable.
I chose a 10-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate unit using calb cells after comparing several solar battery options. I was less interested in chasing the biggest advertised capacity than in having dependable daily cycling and a sensible warranty. The installer mounted it beside the inverter in our garage, added a backup loads panel, and programmed the system to reserve 25% for outages. That reserve has already helped twice during brief evening outages; the refrigerator and internet never blinked.
My only annoyance came during the first hot week. The battery stopped discharging at 6:30pm even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I found the backup reserve had automatically increased to 50% because the weather service predicted a storm. After lowering it back to 25%, the system resumed normally. The support technician also explained the setting clearly, which made me feel better about leaving it unattended.
Now I check the monitoring app with my morning coffee and compare yesterday’s energy flows.
