Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Personally, I installed a Growatt SPF 5000 ES inverter and a 10.2 kWh lithium battery in our home last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. A local electrician mounted the inverter in the utility room, ran new cables to the battery cabinet, and connected the panels through the existing combiner box. He also configured the battery charge window and enabled grid charging only as a backup.
During sunny days, solar usually fills the battery before lunch. By 5:30 p.m., our cooking, laundry, and heat pump then run from stored power instead of the grid. At our old tariff, that change has been more noticeable than the solar production itself.
My average evening grid draw fell from roughly 8-10 kWh to 1-2 kWh, depending on weather. The first complete month after installation, our bill was about $68 lower than the same month the previous year, despite similar temperatures. On cloudy days, the battery still covers the refrigerator, lights, router, and much of our evening use.
The only hiccup came during a storm. The inverter showed a battery communication warning and stopped discharging at 7:00 p.m. I shut down the inverter, waited five minutes, checked the battery breaker, and restarted everything. The warning disappeared, but I later found one communication plug was not fully seated. Since then, I have labeled both ends and keep the restart procedure taped inside the cabinet.
Searching forums afterward, I noticed people often write “spf 5000 es growatt” when discussing similar inverter settings. I cannot claim the system is completely maintenance-free, but the monitoring app has made battery state-of-charge easy to watch. I now check it each morning, and the quiet backup power during outages has made the investment worthwhile for our family, especially during winter nights.
