8 months ago, I added a 10kWh LiFePO4 battery to my rooftop solar system, mostly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. The installation was less dramatic than I expected. My installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and programmed charging from solar between late morning and afternoon. I kept the existing solar panels, so the battery simply became the buffer between daytime generation and nighttime use.
The first week made the benefit obvious. Before storage, my panels exported power at a low credit during the day, then I paid the full peak rate after dinner. Now the battery usually reaches 100% by about 2 p.m. and runs the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and heat-pump water heater through the evening. On clear days, my daily grid consumption fell from roughly 18 kWh to 5 or 6 kWh. My monthly bill dropped by about $70, although results vary with weather and utility rates.
I charge the battery with a 58.4v20a lifepo4 battery charger when I use a separate portable battery bank for camping. I bought it after checking the battery management system requirements, and I never leave charging unattended. The charger is not part of my normal home routine, but having a compatible LiFePO4 charger has been convenient.
My only hiccup came during a cloudy week. The inverter stopped discharging at 20%, which I initially thought was a fault. The manual explained that the reserve setting protected battery life. I lowered the backup reserve to 15% and restored the normal schedule, but kept 20% during storm season. After six months, the battery still performs quietly, with no noticeable capacity loss. For me, solar battery storage is less about energy independence and more about using my own electricity when it matters most. The savings still feel very real.
