Finally, my home battery stopped feeling like expensive equipment and started feeling like part of the household. I installed an off grid lithium battery bank last spring, mainly to use more of my rooftop solar after sunset. Before that, my panels produced plenty during the day, but we still bought electricity during the evening peak, exactly when our utility charged the most.
The difference showed up in the first bill. I programmed the solar battery to charge from the panels and then discharge between 4 and 9 p.m. On sunny days, it usually carried the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and kitchen appliances through dinner. Our monthly bill fell from roughly $185 to $92 in the first month, although I am sure weather and our behavior helped too. Over the summer, our average stayed close to $105. That is not complete energy independence, but seeing the battery storage system cover the expensive hours has been satisfying.
The most useful feature has been the battery monitor. I can see state of charge, solar production, and household consumption from my phone, and it has changed some habits. I run the dishwasher around noon, when solar generation is strongest, and save the stored energy for later.
I did have one scare during a cloudy week. The battery stopped discharging at 18 percent, even though I expected it to continue lower. After checking the settings, I found the backup reserve had been raised during a software update. I restored the reserve to 12 percent, and normal operation returned. I now check firmware settings after updates instead of assuming everything stayed the same.
So far, this lithium ion battery backup has been quiet, predictable, and more practical than I expected. It does not eliminate utility bills, but it makes my solar investment work harder every evening.
